Once In A Lifetime Video: Onboard The Gulf 917K With Bruce Canepa as he Battles Gunnar Jeannette in a 908

This is an incredible onboard video, possibly one of the best out there. Captured by Racer.com, they fitted a GoPro to Bruce Canepa’s head, and allowed us to ride along inside his Flat-12 powered 917. The windshield makes for a dramatic viewpoint, but the inside of the Porsche is almost equally exciting. You can see Bruce slamming the shift lever home in each gear, and coaxing the engine through its rev range with a flex of his lower extremities.

In the video, you watch the 18-minute sprint race in which Canepa chases after Gunnar Jeannette in the 908/2 Flunder. Gunnar had the measure of Bruce in the first half of the race, and managed to pull a minor gap over him to maintain third, but soon his tires began to fall off and Canepa regained that space. On the very last turn of the very last lap, Bruce managed to make a pick in traffic and pull into second position ahead of Gunnar. Honestly, it was one of the best vintage-racing duels I’ve ever seen in person. Such an excellent race.
