Watch this vintage rally 911 scream through the woods for 10 minutes

Yesterday we brought you the story of a vintage 911 rally car simulator, but today we’re showing you the real thing. This is Andreas Dahms’ 1974 Carrera that has been running down the stages for time immemorial. This car and driver combo have been together since at least 2014 when they began running ADAC-sanctioned rally in Germany. Despite running in “historic” class against much more modern machinery, Dahms has been holding his own for quite some time, taking three DRM Historic victories and eleven stage wins in 2021 alone.

In the video below from McRallye, you can see a medley of Dahms’ sojourns during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Across those two years the pairing competed in 16 different historic rally competitions. I can’t personally think of 16 stage rallies that have been run in North America over the last two years, and that’s a whole continent. Dahms only competes within the country of Germany! It must be so interesting to live in a country with such profound motorsport culture. Gosh, I just love Germany so much!

Being Porschephiles, you probably already know about the Euro 1974 Carrera, but in case you don’t here’s what it’s all about. As the successor to the 1973 Carrera 2.7 RS name, the new simplified “Carrera” had big shoes to fill. With the same mechanically injected 2.7 liter found in the earlier RS, the 74 Carrera put down the same 210 horsepower. The US spec Carrera got the watered-down 911S engine with just 175 horsepower, so it’s a pretty significant difference.

I would certainly love the opportunity to drive a 74 Carrera, but would I want to sling it through the forest stages of Germany at speed like Andreas does? I mean, it would be a lot of fun until I went a little too far and smashed one of those wide fenders on a tree. As cool as a rally simulator is, I don’t think there’s really any way to replicate this feeling.
