Driving Larry Kosilla’s Modified 964 Carrera 4

Master detailer Larry Kosilla recently performed major surgery on his 964 C4. Larry’s modified 964 received an all-new roof with no sunroof, in order to shave weight and increase the rigidity of the structure. At more than 3,200lbs, the 964 weighs about as much as a 997 Carrera 4, making Larry’s chosen modification path a slightly surprising one. To get to the point where this major, invasive surgery seemed worthwhile, Larry needed to do a lot of other work, and a lot of track time to come to this radical conclusion. Compared to its previous appearances on film, this 964 is a more hardcore and focused beast.

This Porsche seems to receive new wheels about as often as I buy new shoes, and it has had at least four different sets across its appearances on our site. The latest set is a custom set of 17″ D90 alloys commissioned specifically for this car. Power comes from a 3.8l flat-six mated to the standard G50-derived all-wheel-drive transaxle. To mitigate the C4’s tendency to understeer, Larry used a set of JRZ RS Pro coilovers.

While the 964 Carrera 4 has long appeared to be the ultimate daily driver air-cooled 911, it is refreshing to see one modified for track use.
