On Friday, December 21, 2012 PorschePurist changed its name to FlatSixes and the PorschePurist.com and 993C4S.com domains are now redirecting to FlatSixes.com. While we’ve done our best to make this change as seamless as possible there are sure to be some small adjustments necessary.
One of the biggest differences you’ll notice is an overhaul to the site making it even more user friendly. We changed our color palette slightly and we’ve updated the type face and font size to make our posts a bit easier to read. In addition, we’ve changed the provider we use to send out email updates and RSS updates. Lastly, in the coming months we’ll roll out even more enhancements including a free classifieds section and a new forum.
What You Need to Do
If we’ve done everything properly you shouldn’t have to do much. Just consider the following:
- If you view this site by visiting it directly you’ll eventually need to update your bookmark from http://PorschePurist.com to https://flatsixes.com so you might as well do it now. For the immediate future PorschePurist.com and 993C4S.com will automatically redirect to the new site. At some point in the future this will no longer be the case but we’ll remind you again before then.
- If you get your updates via email we’re migrating our list server to a new service. Starting with the next email (sometime next week) you’ll receive an email from “FlatSixes Porsche Newsletter” with an email address of “newsletter@flatsixes.com”. If you want to be certain you continue to receive our updates, please be sure to “whitelist” the email address “newsletter@flatsixes.com”. If you haven’t received your next email by December 28th then we’re definitely going to your spam/junk filter. Please look in your spam/junk filter and move us to your “whitelist” of acceptable emails.
- For those of you who get our updates via RSS you should experience no change. We’re consolidating all of our feeds into a single new one and will serve these out from our new service provider. Like our email subscribers, if you haven’t seen an RSS update by December 28th simply visit our subscription page and add our new feed by clicking the supplied links.
Why We’re Changing Our Name
The simple answer is because Porsche wants us to. The longer version is a bit more complex but comes down to the same thing. For a long time now, years actually, we’ve been talking with the legal group at Porsche about changing our name. Due to US trademark laws, companies like Porsche are forced to actively and constantly defend their trademark. While PCNA’s marketing and PR departments recognize we help to create “goodwill” for Porsche’s brand, their hands are tied by legal’s duty to defend the Porsche trademark. If Porsche’s legal department doesn’t defend against all potential infringements, they risk having someone who truly is infringing on their trademark being able to point to a domain like PorschePurist.com as an example of why they should be able to continue doing so.
At first we thought about fighting, but what would be the point? Even if we won, we would likely ruin a relationship with the company we love. What’s more, Porsche was extremely gracious through the whole process and gave us time to find a new name and prepare for making the change. As you might imagine, our biggest challenge was finding a name we felt still represented the original intent of PorschePurist.com and was also available not only as a domain name, but as a Twitter handle, Facebook page, YouTube channel, etc. etc. It’s amazing how hard this is to do these days and we were thrilled to find FlatSixes.com.
So What Now?
We make the change. At some point on Friday the 21st of December, 2012 (assuming the world doesn’t end) we redirected all our traffic to the new site and continued to fine tune https://flatsixes.com. While we’ve done our best to convert to the new site and get everything working, we’ve most likely missed something. Don’t be surprised or upset if you still find references to PorschePurist or links that don’t work properly. Instead, please use our contact form and let us know what you’ve found so we can fix it.
Thank you to everyone for your support of PorschePurist.com over the last five years and we look forward to many more years at FlatSixes.com. Please be sure to share this notice on any forums you participate in, within your local Porsche community or PCA region and on Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin. The more people that know the better!
