If you own a Porsche 993 and aren’t fortunate enough to have factory Litronics then you know just how weak the factory lights are for night driving. In fact, in my opinion, they’re down right dangerous. One of the fastest, easiest and best upgrades you can do for your 993 is to convert to High Intensity Discharge (HID) bulbs. Not only is it a simple and practical project, but completing it on your own will make your 993 more enjoyable to drive at night and give you the confidence to tackle larger and more complex projects in the future. On a scale of 1 to 5 wrenches with 5 being the hardest, I would rate this project at 1.5 wrenches. The only reason it’s not a 1 is due to the fact that you might possibly have to increase the size of a hole in the headlight assembly in order for the bulb to fit (we didn’t need to do this on our conversion).
One of the FLATSIXES.com garages is located just outside of Boston, MA – just a short drive from Bentley Publishers in Cambridge, MA. When Bentley contacted us last year and asked if we would be willing to allow them use of our 993 to finish up the sunroof section in their newest service manual, we said sure. Once at Bentley’s shop we started brainstorming on projects that other 993 owners might find interesting and decided that a HID conversion DIY would be a great place to start. As our 993 was still rocking the original halogens, and Bentley’s 993 was already equipped with Litronics, we “selflessly” offered up our C4S as a volunteer for the project. The video above is the result.
If you own a 993 and haven’t yet purchased Bentley’s “Porsche 911 Carrera (Type 993) Service Manual: 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998“, get one! At $135 bucks it’s some of the best money you’ll ever spend on your 993 and for the most part you’ll find working on it is far simpler than you could ever imagine. Stay tuned for future DIY projects from Bentley and FLATSIXES.com.
