Front axle lift systems aren’t new to Porsche. The 911 GT3 comes fitted with one as does the GT3 RS. However, they are both pneumatic systems that rely on modules in the PASM dampers, powered by a compressor to lift the front-end about 30mm (about 1.1 inches) when activated. You can check out this post for a refresher if you’re not familiar with their mechanics.
Now, with the all new Carrera models, even the “lowest” end 911 can be fitted with an optional front-axle lift system. What’s better is that the system on the new 911s raises the front-end even higher than the system found on the GT3 and GT3 RS (40mm or about 1 1/2 inches vs. 30mm or about 1.1 inches). The difference is in how the system operates.
Porsche’s New Front Axle Lift System Explained
Instead of being pneumatically based, the front axle lift system in the new 911.2 is electro-hydraulic. An actuator located on the spring strut does the heavy lifting when fluid is transferred via a hydraulic pump, through pipes, that run to the actuators. As noted above, the front axles lift system increase ground clearance at the front spoiler by 40mm, or 1 1/2 inches, while at the same time increasing the approach angle by about 3 degrees. Anyone that’s ever tapped their front spoiler knows this extra clearance can be a savior with big speed bumps or steep access ramps to curbs, garages and parking lots. Once engaged, using a button on the center console, the front reaches its full height in about 5 seconds. You can engage the system at speeds up to 20 mph, once over that your Porsche’s front axle will lower to its normal ride height automatically.
Cost Of Porsche’s Front Axle Lift System
Option cost for the system in the U.S. is $2590. Is it worth it? It could be? Do you live or work in a complex with speed bumps or a steep approach angle to the parking lot? Does your driveway have a tough angle to negotiate? Our old house did and it was a nightmare getting the 993 in and out safely. A system like this would have been a must in that house. Ultimately, you need to decide if it’s right for you as it’s only a must have if you’ll need to use it on a regular basis.
