Porsche Design is celebrating its 50th anniversary and what better way to do so than by releasing a special edition model. The 2022 Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design commemorates the founding of Porsche Design by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the 911, and his son, Ferry Porsche. This vehicle is based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS and will be limited to 750 units globally.
The 2022 Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design features unique aesthetic elements inspired by the Chronograph 1, the first all-black watch, and Porsche Design’s first product. Every example will be finished in black to pay homage to the unique timepiece. Certain exterior details will be finished in Satin Platinum including the mixed diameter 20- and 21-inch Turbo S alloy wheels. The Targa bar and Porsche Design logo will also be finished in Satin Platinum while the brake calipers are done up in high gloss black. A special 50 Years Porsche Design badge will also be embedded on the engine grille.
Inside, the 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design gets several distinct cues like the silver numbered badge on the dashboard to indicate its rarity. The top of the center console gets the signatures of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and Ferry Porsche. Sport-Tex seat inserts are finished in Black and Cool Grey while the headrests get an embossed 50 Years Porsche Design logo. The center marking on the GT sports steering wheel is finished in Slate Grey. You also get more standard equipment including 18-way adaptive sport seats, the Sport Chrono package, a Porsche Design Subsecond Clock with a red second hand, and Slate Greyseat beltss.
Since it’s based on the 911 Targa 4 GTS, the 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six with 473 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. It also gets AWD and Porsche Traction Management as standard equipment. Porsche’s eight-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic transmission is standard while a seven-speed manual is available as a no-cost option. PDK examples also get a sport exhaust system and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV+) as standard. Models with the stick shift get a mechanical locking rear differential instead.
In addition to the limited edition 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design, two new watches were announced alongside it. The Chronograph 1—– 911 50 Years of Porsche Design pays homage to the original released in 1972. It will be included with every purchase of the actual vehicle. Differences on this watch include the current logo and lettering, a sapphire crystal case back so you can see the winding rotor that has a similar design to the car’s steering wheel, and an engraving with the same number as the vehicle it comes with.
Pricing for the 2022 Porsche 911 Edition 50 Years Porsche Design starts at $197,200 and yes that includes the fancy watch. It will arrive in the U.S. this spring. If you only want a watch, you’ll need to shell out $7,700 for the Chronograph 1—– 1972 Limited Edition. This is essentially a remake of the original watch and is the same size and design. It has a solid titanium case back and is donning the historic Porsche Design logo. You’ll need to be quick, though, because the Chronograph 1 — 1972 Limited Edition will be capped at 500 examples.
