Most LEGO sets you see for sale commercially, like the Porsche 918 and 911 RSR in the Speed Champions set, come from the incredibly talented group of people at LEGO known as Master Builders. However, since 2008 LEGO has allowed anyone to submit designs via the LEGO Ideas web-site. Designs are voted on and those that receive at least 10,000 positive votes go on for further review. If a design is ultimately selected by the team at LEGO it is made available for sale commercially and the original designer gets a 1% royalty as a commission.
Earlier today we received the following via email, Let me introduce a LEGO creation i think you’ll like: The Porsche 917K, Le Mans 1971 winner: Engine, suspensions, steering, removable body panels, gullwing doors: almost all you can find in the real car is here. Proposed on the LEGO ideas website, this 917 could become an official LEGO set if 10000 votes are reached. The email contained a link, and the 917K you see above and below is what we found.
Created by LEGO user Greg998 this is a 1/8 scale LEGO version of the Porsche 917K that won 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans. His version features real steering, full suspension, the flat 12 engine, removable engine cover, and a modular structure that allows you to build other versions of the 917 from this chassis.
If you’re a LEGO fan, and this is something you would like to see available for sale, you can help make it happen. Simply jump on over to the LEGO Idea website and lend it your support by voting for it. You’ll need to register to vote, but they’ve made it easy to do so by tying in social media profiles. Having already built the LEGO Porsche 918, we’d love to see this become available.
Please take a minute to vote and then use the buttons below to share this post with other Porsche fans. Together, we can make this happen!
