As near as we can tell, the first Porsche Hot Wheels car was produced in 1975. Known as the P-911, this miniature Porsche was part of the Flying Colors lineup from Hot Wheels and stuck around in one way, shape or form until 2001. Since then, and in the years between 1975 and 2011, Hot Wheels parent company, Mattel, produced a number of Porsche die-casts ranging from the “Upfront 924” to the 911 GT3 RS as well as everything in between.
Last week we got word of a new collection that will be available this June at Walmart. Titled the “Porsche Series” there are a total of eight cars to choose from:
- Porsche 914-6
- Porsche 917K
- Porsche 918 Spyder
- Porsche 935-78
- Porsche 959
- Porsche 993 GT2
- Porsche Boxster Spyder
- Porsche Carrera GT
Surprisingly, a number of these Porsche Hot Wheels have all been produced before, just with different colors and under a different series. While all the Porsches in this series get a fresh look (and some of the color choices leave a little to be desired in my opinion) the only really “new” style will be the Porsche 918 as this is the first time it will be offered.
Porsche Hot Wheels collecting is big business
Just check out the listings on Ebay if you want to see for yourself. The new Porsche Series becomes available at Walmart this June. While we don’t necessarily love all the colors/liveries, I’m sure we’ll still grab a set to add to our growing collection. It really is the least expensive and most accessible way to get into die-cast collecting.
