Last year we introduced you to our newest project car, called simply “Project Boxster Clubsport”. In that first installment we found the right car, we purchased it for a song, and it was sitting politely in our garage waiting for its first modifications. So far, the Boxster has been happy to simply rack up the miles and keep things rocking along. It’s an excellent Porsche, and we aim to make it just a little bit more excellent.

Before we get started we would need to thank Michelin. As many of you know, Michelin is a long-time sponsor of FLATSIXES.com. Recently, they have generously offered to sponsor Project Boxster Clubsport as part of their involvement with our site. Please consider checking out what Michelin has to offer by clicking their banners on this page. Without Michelin’s support, and others like them, this site really wouldn’t be possible.
In this installment, we’ll show you just how easy it is to install a set of LED license plate light bulbs. On a difficulty scale from one to ten, this is probably a 0.5. Grab a screwdriver and make a huge difference in how your car looks.

Once our ergonomic issues had been sorted, it was easy to decide what our next project would be. Since we got the car, we’d noticed that one of the licence plate lights was burned out, and that probably should be remedied. Being that we already had a box of LED lights in our garage, it was easy enough to pop them in within just a couple of minutes using only a phillips head screwdriver. If you need your own set of LED lights, you can get them from any number of suppliers, including Suncoastparts.com.
The first step is to remove the two screws that hold the light assembly to the body of the car.
You can tell from the picture that the bulb in our Boxster had definitely blown up, and was due for replacement. Once the assembly is removed from the body, don’t bother disconnecting the wires from the assembly, simply separate the plastic backing and then the rubber cover from the lens, as depicted above.
This type of bulb is known as a “festoon”, and is only held in with the pressure of the clips on either side. It is easy to remove the bulb by pressing out on one of its holders, and installation is similarly simple.
Once installed, we kick on the lights to verify that everything is working as it should, and voila, that’s all it takes. Please forgive us the dirty plate area, the license plate isn’t removed very often on a car, so it builds up some road grime back there.

Total – $0 (we already owned the bulbs. Budget about $35 if you need to buy them)
Next up on the project list is polishing the headlights. Like many cars the age of our Project Boxster Clubsport, the headlights have a cloudy film built up on them from oxidation. In our next post we’ll show you what you need to remove that cloudiness and how to do it.
