In 2003, Porsche introduced the Cayenne, an entirely new segment for the brand, then in 2008, launched the Panamera, extending their reach and proving further that Porsche can provide excitement for the everyday commute. Just last week, Porsche pushed into yet another new market segment with the launch of the much anticipated 2014 Macan compact sport utility. More and more people are discovering the joy that Porsche can provide, and they aren’t just a niche ‘weekend car’ builder anymore. Porsche is now, with its seventh product line, the premier sport-luxury brand.
Where most other German manufacturers focus on luxury before sporting ability, Porsche turns that on its head and puts vehicle capabilities before nearly any other concerns. Porsche describes their new car as having “dramatic acceleration and braking figures, impressive engine power, extreme agility, and optimum steering precision.” They go on to state “As the first Porsche in the compact SUV segment, the Macan will set new standards in terms of dynamic performance, on pavement and on trails.”
On the face of things, the Macan doesn’t seem like much more than a rebodied version of Audi’s Q5, but we can tell you with authority that Porsche’s Macan is as much a Porsche as any other car they manufacture. For starters, the Macan is manufactured at Porsche’s new 500 Million Euro plant in Leipzig, which is capable of turning out up to 50,000 units per year. Furthermore, the Macan shares very few parts with Audi’s models, using Porsche developed drivetrains, electronic controls, and assembly methods to differentiate them. Porsche’s new Macan is more than a Sport Utility Vehicle, it’s the first Sports Car Utility Vehicle.
If you didn’t get a chance to see it, the entire World Premier of the Porsche Macan at the L.A. Auto Show, featuring Patrick Long and Maria Sharapova, is presented below.
