Earlier this month, Adidas announced that they'd be giving away a brand new Porsche 991 Carrera to the three fastest sprinters at the NFL Combine competition, provided they were wearing Adidas' new "UNCAGED" lightweight cleat. In years past Adidas has simply given $100,000 to the fastest runners in the 40 yard sprint category, but this year they wanted to up the ante, so to speak. The cars, a trio of white 991 Carreras decked out in Adidas' new cheetah insignia to complement those found on the their new line of cleats, might have been quick, but the cheetah vinyl wrap didn't make them look too good.
According to reports, the NFL has put the kibosh to Adidas' plan because of sponsorship issues. The NFL has a longstanding promotional partnership with General Motors, and because of that relationship the NFL will not allow Adidas to give away anything other than a General Motors product. Rather than subject these quick players to driving a lowly Corvette or, something even worse, Adidas has instead opted to give the players cash with which to purchase whichever car (or whatever else) they so choose. With $100K in your pocket, though, wouldn't your first trip be to the nearest Porsche dealer? I think I'd be putting my money down on a pre-ordered Cayman GT4, how about you? Then again, I won't be winning a sprint competition any time in my life...
