Porsche has a little secret weapon up their sleeve when it comes to the 919 LMP1 program, and that is their new state-of-the-art in-house simulator. By including this fully immersive unit in their comprehensive testing regimen, Porsche can continue driver training programs straight through the winter, without costly travel to warmer circuits. This simulator allows Porsche to gather real-world experience and data, while acclimatizing their drivers to the LMP processes.
An LMP1 Simulator of this quality is almost mandatory in this era, as you can be assured that Toyota and Audi have similarly impressive in-house testing procedures, and all of the best open-wheel teams use them. Interestingly, the video depicts Porsche’s use of an LMP2 RS Spyder monocoque section, which was an open-top car, while the new LMP1 is a closed top coupe. The video also shows a gorgeous, and likely minutely accurate, reproduction of the Circuit de la Sarthe.
Rumor has it that the young Brendon Hartley was selected to be a Porsche LMP1 driver based, at least in part, upon his vast experience with simulators. With his work testing for Formula 1 teams, Hartley has logged countless hours in various simulators, and can assist Porsche with setting up their new system to provide accurate results.
Whether this simulator is helpful or not, we’ll soon find out when Porsche debuts the 919 Hybrid at the World Endurance Championship season opener, Silverstone in April.
