I don’t think I’m alone in thinking that today’s top-tier racecars are not as handsome as their counterparts from twenty five or more years ago. Fortunately, the 919 seems to translate much, much better to LEGO than the 962 or 917 ever have. Portuguese builder Manuel Nascimento constructed both the 2015 and 2016 Porsche 919 Hybrids in LEGO Technic form. They’re extraordinary. Though the video is a little long for a walk around of two LEGO cars (Manuel does not speak English, so each question must be translated), it’s well worth watching the whole thing.
According to Manuel both of these Porsche LEGO racecars move under their own power, steer, and feature electrically actuated doors. Both have single speed transmissions, as the builder says they are meant more for display than for running. As display pieces, they are truly top notch. The fine pieces available through Technic proved perfect for replicating even smallest details on the 919, such as the rear diffusers.
According to Manuel neither car features any custom-made pieces. Apart from the flexible white axle shafts used to form the wheel arches, all of the pieces are relatively common. The graphics were custom made by Manuel himself. Hopefully LEGO is listening and watching, because these are two of the best looking LEGO Porsches we’ve ever seen.
