Thankfully, it’s been quite some time since we’ve seen an accident of this magnitude involving such precious cargo. The last time was when a train wreck damaged at least 20 brand new Porsche 997s. Before that, it was the cringe worthy accident involving an unlucky truckload of vintage 356s (including a Speedster or two) and a fast moving train. Both accidents pulled at the heart strings of most Porsche fans. This time, we get word from Germany of an accident involving a car carrier loaded with 7 new Porsche Cayman GT4s.
Details are a little scarce, but a post on the facebook in the Porsche Youngtimers group shared the pictures you see in this post. From what we can gather, the truck transporting the GT4s was traveling somewhere in Germany on the Autobahn when it found itself closing on slower traffic ahead and began to brake. Allegedly, the truck traveling behind the car carrier either couldn’t slow down in time or didn’t see the Porsche filled carrier coming to an unexpected halt. As a result, the following truck rear-ended the carrier at what we can only guess was a high rate of speed based on the damage seen in the pictures.
From the comments we’ve seen on Facebook and social media, some are saying that these GT4s were not destined for the US, but instead for European delivery. While not all look ruined, a couple are obviously beyond repair. I know if this were my GT4 out for delivery I would be asking for my deposit back or a new car in its place.
Local police are said to have valued the damage at more than one million Euros (seems a bit on the low side to us) and it was noted that both truck drivers, along with the driver of third car that was collected into the accident, required medical attention at a local hospital. Their current condition is unknown.
If anyone has more information about the condition of the drivers, the cars or details on the accident, please share them in the comments below.
