We’ve noticed a lot of people coming through the site searching for 959s for sale. Unfortunately, the car that was the subject of this post is no longer available for sale. If you’re linking in from somewhere else on FlatSixes.com the original post is below for your enjoyment.
When I first saw this Porsche 959 listed on eBay, my immediate reaction was “Hey, Ralph Lauren is selling his 959.” After a few quick phone calls (one to the seller and another to a friend who helps Ralph with his cars) I was able to determine this isn’t Ralph’s car. Not that it really makes a difference, just might be cool if you’re in to the whole celebrity provenance thing. Anyway, given the rarity of these supercars (Porsche only built 337), and the price-tag, there’s a good chance you still might be getting a celebrity owned Porsche (besides Ralph Lauren, Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Jerry Seinfeld are all known to own a 959).
Built from 1986 to 1988 the 959 was offered in two trim levels: Sport and Komfort (race and street, respectively). The street variant was first offered to Porsche enthusiast in 1987 at a cost of $225,000. At the time these cars were not street legal in the US but many still found their way to our shores through the gray market. It wasn’t until 1999 when the “Show and Display” laws were passed, through the hard work of people like Sam Cabiglio, Bruce Canepa and Bryan Milazzo, that the 959 could be legally driven in the US.
The description of the 959 for sale on eBay does not detail where any of the conversion work was done and/or who did it, but it does mention the car’s service history comes completely from Andial in Southern California. You can see the complete listing of this 1987 Porsche 959 on ebay. The “Buy it Now” price is set at a cool half-million, which according to the few people I spoke with, who know and have sold other 959s, isn’t far off the mark. The fact is, the 959 may be one of the most undervalued collectible Porsches on the market and it is only a matter of time before that changes.
