GTSpirit.com had an opportunity to take our favorite Porsche street car, the Cayman GT4, for a spin around the Lausitzring in Germany. With some initial laps in the GT4, they then take the GT4 Clubsport out for a few laps to demonstrate some of the differences between the two Porsches. The GT4 is one of the best road going cars Porsche has ever built, and it can certainly hold its own at the track, but the Clubsport takes things to another level entirely.
In the video, you can see them explain that not only is the interior stripped out for weight savings, and a full roll cage added in for safety, but there remain some crucial bits from the street car that I found quite interesting. In front of the gearshift, you’ll see the controls for the HVAC system remain. Now the Clubsport doesn’t have air conditioning, but I find it intriguing that they kept the blower motors and fans for the dash vents. Obviously, the dashboard is the same, and the original stalks are still hiding behind the steering wheel to control various lights and computer options.
Dynamically, the key differences are in the transmission and the ABS module. In the street car, Porsche have fitted the GT4 with a manual stick, while in the racing version this has been replaced with a PDK box. Gone too is the factory ABS, and in its place is a motorsport-oriented control knob that allows the driver to dial in the level of ABS intervention they desire based on conditions. In the front, the GT4’s GT3-based front suspension has been swapped out for the same stuff found on a GT3 Cup. I absolutely loved the GT4, but oh what I wouldn’t give for a few laps in a GT4 Clubsport.
