Porsche’s meticulously hand-crafted Project Gold is finally ready for its close up. In an effort to celebrate the end of 993 production twenty years ago, as well as celebrate Porsche’s 70 year history as an automotive manufacturer, Porsche built possibly the nicest 993 Turbo S in the world. Interestingly Porsche makes mention of the car not being street legal, but it’s based on an original 1990s 993 body, and carries a brand new 993 Turbo S specification engine, so I can’t place why they would say its use is limited to race tracks. The car is set to make its world debut in the flesh at Porsche Rennsport Reunion in September, and then will be sold off to the highest bidder at RM Sotheby’s Porsche Anniversary sale at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta this October. All proceeds from the sale of Project Gold will be donated to the Ferry Porsche Foundation.
According to Porsche Classic, this car was built from all new pieces. Once the body shell was stripped clean, the workshops dug up all of the necessary pieces and got to work assembling them into a functioning piece of gold and black art. This just goes to show the level of commitment Porsche has to their heritage models, as they still offer all of the pieces you would need to re-assemble a 993 from essentially scratch.
Project Gold, as you can see in the video above, closely mimics the 2018 Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive series model, which was limited to 500 units worldwide and has been sold out for ages. I would bet that whoever ends up with the 993 version of that brand new car will have one of those in their collection as well. If you want it, you’ll have to bid high in October, as this is the only one in the world, and it doesn’t get any more Exclusiv Manufaktur than that.
“Project Gold” showcases the comprehensive skill of Porsche Classic in fascinating fashion”, says Detlev von Platen, Member of the Executive Board responsible for Sales and Marketing at Porsche AG. “This project clearly demonstrates our strategic approach. Although we are starting a new chapter in our sports car history with the Porsche Taycan, the story of how the company evolved is no less significant. On the contrary, this Golden Yellow 993 demonstrates how incredibly passionate we are about the tradition of our brand.”
