It’s a new year, and Porsche is still winning awards left and right. The newest addition to their trophy cabinet is the “2014 Automobile Magazine All Stars” list inclusion for the 981 Boxster and Cayman. The mid-engine twins have been featured on this list every year since 2010, and five other times before that. Porsche’s Boxster and Cayman are perennial favorites that continue to deliver on a proven recipe.
Interestingly, this year, the crew at Automobile decided to take a road trip in their self-ascribed All-Stars. Once they were determined, they gathered the keys and went for a road trip to make sure the cars they had chosen remained All-Stars after strenuous use. Escaping the monochrome white/grey that is Michigan in the winter, they took the ten cars down to Nawlins, Louisiana, the long way down. Passing through Indianapolis and Louisville, the Automobile staff had these cars in every scenario imaginable, and none of them (though most importantly, the Cayman) were determined to be let downs.
Here’s what the Automobile staff had to say about Porsche’s tin-top sport model after a few thousand miles behind the wheel.
“Yes, there are faster cars for the money. What you’re paying for here is perfection. The Porsche Boxster convertible and Cayman coupe encourage you to drive quickly, make you into a better driver, and reassure you that an error won’t cascade into a disaster. The accelerator pedal is as smooth and progressive as the volume knob on a McIntosh amplifier. The steering is so precise that you feel as if you’re turning the car with your eyes. And in an era of engine conformity, the unique sound of the Porsche boxer engine mounted behind your ears is a standout experience.”
During the course of the road trip, magazine staffer David Zenlea got the keys to the Cayman, and had this to say about it.
“I pounce ahead in the Cayman, taking sweeping curves at 70 mph. The accelerator pedal is as smooth and progressive as the volume knob on a McIntosh amplifier. Even on performance winter tires—like most of the cars here—the steering is so precise that you feel as if you’re turning the car with your eyes. If you were to pick one car to demonstrate to someone what “driving dynamics” are, the Cayman would be it.”
“Perfection”. That’s how the 981 Cayman and Boxster are described here. I can think of no higher praise for a car than that one simple word. The Boxster and Cayman really are amazing cars, and in my eyes, absolutely deserving of the term.
