The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah has been doing a series of ‘one take’ videos on YouTube that are quite interesting. He solicited his fans in the LA area to bring their modified performance cars to the Angeles Crest area north of the city where he proceeded to shoot series of fast and loose videos featuring as many of them as he could. Each video is a quick “picture-in-picture” video with the main image being the road ahead, and the smaller section being a shot of Matt, and the car’s owner, talking as they drive. The videos are short, easy to produce, and take very little editing to be ready for prime time. This most recent video is one of my favorites.
Matt takes a gorgeous 930 out to get some impressions, but this 930 is far from stock. It’s got a set of Mahle 3.4 liter oversized pistons and cylinders. It’s been fitted with a more progressive ball-bearing turbo setup that, combined with a smoother flowing intercooler and headers, takes some of the peakiness out of the 930’s notorious powerband. The car also has some larger lighter wheels with modern Nitto NT05 rubber on them, which helps to reduce the snap-oversteer that earned this car the moniker “Doctor Killer” back in the 1980s.
Matt, if you’re reading this, I forgive you for redundantly calling the car a “930 Turbo”. That’s one of my biggest Porsche pet peeves, but I’ll let it slide, because this car is so awesome.
In a comment from the owner of the car, he listed everything he’s done to make the car drive as nicely as it does. The list is quite long, and the parts are all quality, so it would seem that the owner has done his research here. It’s a very nicely modified 930.
